This gnocchi recipe uses DeLallo’s Gnocchi Kit to make some of the easiest homemade gnocchi – just add water. The results are light and airy with that signature savory potato flavor. It’s seriously the best gnocchi next to ordering from your favorite restaurant or making it completely from scratch. Gnocchi with Grilled Chicken in Roasted Red Pepper Sauce

DeLallo Potato & Cheese Italian Gnocchi Kit contains everything you need to make fresh potato gnocchi in minutes. Just add water to the ready-to-use mix to create tasty Italian-style potato and cheese gnocchi. I love to keep a few packages in my pantry to add to soups and pasta dishes. Here I added some grilled chicken and whipped up an easy homemade roasted red pepper sauce.

To make the roasted red pepper sauce, I used jarred roasted red peppers, simmered with shallots, garlic, Pecorino Romano, and a touch of cream. It just couldn’t be any easier! This sauce would also be great on any other pasta, grilled chicken, fish, or grain bowls. For another roasted red pepper recipe, try my Roasted Red Pepper Soup.

How do you make gnocchi from scratch?

Making gnocchi from scratch is easier than you might think! DeLallo’s Gnocchi Kit saves a ton of time since you don’t have to prep any potatoes.

1. Add water to the DeLallo mixture and stir with a fork.
2. Knead the dough until it’s no longer sticky.
3. Put the dough on a lightly floured surface and form into a loaf shape.
4. Cut the dough into 1-inch strips, roll out to make long ropes, and then cut in 1-inch pieces.
5. If you’d like, you can press the back of the fork into each piece to create gnocchi’s signature ridges.
6. Put the gnocchi in boiling water, cook for 3-5 minutes, and then drain.

Variations:

  • Swap the spinach for Swiss chard
  • Sub shrimp or lobster for grilled chicken

  1. I really disliked this but it could 100% be user error. I may have over cooked the gnocchi, the dish is just very tangy and mushy. It’s possible I didn’t add enough heavy cream, too.

  2. Suspiciously easy and delicious. I sautéed my cauliflower gnocchi and otherwise made as directed. Added sun-dried tomatoes bc I add them to almost anything. Really great dish.

  3. This was amazing! I made the following substitutions for what I had on hand: I used 5 fresh bell peppers (seeded and sliced into strips) and roasted them in the air fryer for about 8 minutes. I used sweet onions instead of shallots. I love dairy but my husband can’t handle a lot of it, so I skipped the half and half. Instead of gnocchi I added Palmini noodles to the pot. Once I had plated it up, I mixed 2 Tablespoons of light sour cream into my serving to make it creamier. I sprinkled dried basil on top. Both my husband and I loved it!

  4. Soooo good! Added some red pepper flakes and some Truvia to spice it up and decrease some of the bitterness. This was just what I needed on a rainy cold evening! Totally going in our rotation!

  5. I made this last night – i have literally been wanting to make it for the last 6 months or so, but life happens – it was excellent – i used the prepackaged Delallo Gnocchi and cubed the chicken up – husband loved it – definitely going into the rotation

  6. This was truly delicious, the only thing I didn’t like was the tartness of the sauce even though I drained the peppers but that’s on me because I don’t like anything tart/vinegary/lemony so what I did was I added a couple of packets of my sweetener and that did the trick for me, but this is truly delicious better than restaurant fine dining, are used Trader Joe’s gnocchi as they were premade and much less sodium than other brands and it worked out to be seven points per serving, so so delicious, Gina thanks again for creating all these delicious recipes that do not taste lite.

  7. I’ve made this 3 times. First two times were great, once with peppers I roasted and once with jar peppers. The third time I used jar peppers and the peppers were too much, kind of bitter.

  8. This was excellent. I used my immersion blender instead of my regular blender so it wasn’t nearly as smooth looking as the picture but I don’t think I would have thought about it if I hadn’t seen the pic first. I liked the little tiny bit of coarseness to it. I might try next time with the blender purely out of curiosity. Also want to try with shrimp instead of chicken. Made with small side salad with Gina’s homemade blue cheese dressing which was out of this world!

I’ve been looking at this recipe for some time now and decided to make it tonight! Absolutely fantastic! Will be making this again!

  10. OMG, I made this tonight, it was absolutely delicious. So full of flavor. I’ll definitely make this again. Thank you!

  11. Really tasty! I used already made Gnocchi and topped it with oven roasted chicken.  Really easy and a keeper over here.

I just made this dish tonight but cheated- used Rana Skillet Gnocchi and Leidy’s Spanish Style Chorizo Sausage- higher points for sure but the flavors were amazing. It’s a great change from the ordinary tomato base sauce- absolutely delish!!!!

      1. The recipe calls for 2-12 ounce jars of roasted peppers drained so I would think at least 18 ounces of fresh peppers which I will use also and roast them in the air fryer instead of using jarred as I don’t like anything acidic or tart and to me the sauce was tart but I added some sweetener to balance it out and it was absolutely delicious. I did use Trader Joe’s premade gnocchi‘s as they have so much less sodium than other brands that are premade

For the GF folks, DeLallo also makes a gluten free gnocchi. It is not a kit, but it was still awesome in this recipe.

  14. Another great one to add to my skinnytaste cook book ! To be able to make one dinner for husband and myself that is delicious . My husband actually looks forward to these dinners. Happy it helps me stay on program and enjoy a good meal.

This was really yummy, a hit with the whole fam! I had to buy GF gnocchi for my daughter, but I couldn’t imagine it being much better with the “make your own” kit. Maybe? The sauce was super easy but very flavorful. It didn’t take much to fill us up, very satisfying!

  16. Yum! Other than adding chilli flakes and subtracting the spinach, I followed the recipe to a T and really liked it! My sauce turned out less thick than I wanted though.

  17. Good simple dish! I bought Gluten Free Racconto Gnocchi and it turned out great. My husband and I added a dash of Garlic Salt and Crushed Red Pepper and it really elevated the flavors in this dish! I would recommend cooking the chicken in boiling Chicken Broth to maintain its tenderness. Thank you Gina for another great recipe!

  18. I love how easy this is to make and and how stealh-healthy it is – I have to sneak my husband veggies in ways he won’t notice. We did think it was too bland the first time, but adding 1/2 tsp of red pepper flakes really makes the sauce sing. It’s a go-to for a quick, healthy meal.

  19. Loved this! Made it last night and it was a huge hit. Easy to make with our nutribullet and we substituted Trader Joe’s cauliflower gnocchi.

  20. Another fabulous recipe from Gina! A long-time fan here. I’m always impressed by how delicious ST recipes are AND how well you can halve them. I made a half recipe tonight. We didn’t have the gnocchi kit, so we just got pre-made gnocchi. It came out amazing! The sauce is so simple, but so yummy. I can’t wait to make it again.

  21. I made this and thought it was perfect. Delicious and easy! My boys loved it! Thank you for the recipe 🙂

  22. It was good but not amazing delicious. It was pretty simple to make, noticed that in the directions there was no mention on when to add the veggie broth. Happy I gave it a try but most likely won’t be in my regular rotation.

  23. I made this recipe just as is –I did have to buy gnocchi from the store. Delicious!! I wouldn’t change anything

Very good recipe. Easy after all preparations are done. Has a very mild taste I did not anticipate. Has gone into ‘do again’ recipe file.

    1.  I had frozen gnocchi to use up and thought I’d give this recipe a try.  My husband and I both loved it and we are not normally fans of red peppers. It is delicious and I can’t wait to make it again!

  25. This was so good and easy. My husband can’t have spinach so I switched the spinach with basil. We’ll make this again and soon.

  26. So easy and light. Great for summer.  The roasted red peppers and Pecorino Romano offer a wonderful smoky flavor.  The whole family loved it  including kids who typically only put butter and fresh Parmesan on their pasta.  I couldn’t find the recommended gnocchi so instead I used Rana skillet gnocchi that took 5 min so it was all on the table in 20 min.  Everyone said this is a make again dish and we are looking forward to the leftovers for lunch. 😀

  27. I really enjoyed the sauce & the gnocchi kit actually wasn’t bad. The only thing I didn’t care for was the chicken. I didn’t like the mix of textures but certainly a personal preference.

  28. This will definitely be incorporated into our family’s go-to favorite recipe used once school begins! Quick, easy, healthy, delicious, and everything was devoured by even the pickiest eater of the family! Awesome recipe we will be regularly using in this household for sure!!!

  29. This was amazing! We used fresh gnocchi from a local pasta shop and could not have been happier. Thank you!

  30. I got the gnocchi kit after watching your video and I really liked it!  It easy to make and tasted good.  Can you make some more recipes with it?

  31. Whoa!!!  This recipe is amazing!! As in restaurant quality amazing!!  Thank you!

I did make a few changes.  I used Trader Joes Cauliflower Gnocchi as it was on hand. I also forgot to purchase the half/half and didn’t have milk for a substitute.  It was still very good – but not creamy.  I added a little more chicken broth and water to make it saucy.  I think this sauce will also be great with pasta.

Again – thank you.  This is defiantly a keeper.  🙂

Delish., even though I modified the steps a bit. My husband commented that this sounded like a good dish for the winter, but I could hardly wait to try the recipe. After serving it to him this week (2x, once as a leftover, which reheated well) he raved about the dish and said I can make it any time😁.

I defrosted 1.5 lbs of chicken and used that in the dish, as well as DeLallo’s 16 oz pre-made gnocchi. I was afraid I might be short on the sauce, but I had enough.

I also put all the sauce ingredients in the blender (after sautéing the shallot and garlic), because even though I read the recipes a few times I always seem to miss a step once I get involved in the cooking process. ! then put it all in the pan in which I’d sautéed the shallot and garlic and heated on a low flame.  I didn’t find any issues with thee sauce after making the modifications.

  33. This was amazing, and was such a nice change from the normal tomato based sauce. I used the Dellalo ready made gnocchi and it turned out perfect!

  34. Gina, I may have mentioned this before, but it’s worth saying again. I can not lose weight making your recipes because the food is always too good and I overeat! Can you make your dishes a little less tasty? 😂. In all seriousness, this was absolutely delicious!

This was very good recipe!  Easy to make and great flavor. I could not find the kit you used so I bought the already repaired ones at my grocery store.  If I can not find the kind you use next time I will just substitute some pasta. I have been using your recipes for several years and they never disappoint me or my family. Thank you very much!

    1. You can order the kit directly from the Delallo site, along with the whole wheat pastas she uses from them. It doesn’t cost any more than you would pay in the store for them and shipping was reasonable (if not free with a specific amount, I forget which) and it came pretty quick. I ordered on Sun or Mon and received it on that Friday.

    1. I bet it would work, BUT I would only make it up to the part where you blend the peppers/garlic/shallot. I’d chill that then finish it off with the cream, spinach, etc when I was ready to serve it.

  36. I just made this tonight, and it was delicious! I couldn’t find the Gnocchi Kit, so I used the ready to boil Delallo potato gnocchi. It was great and probably easier than the kit. Your recipes are always so good as well as calorie friendly.

  37. Just made this last night and it was DELICIOUS! I did use pre-made gnocchi just because i couldnt find the kit. Super easy recipe and my fiance thought it was great too!

  38. Made this today, couldn’t figure out when to use broth, but it was good.  I used TJ’a cauliflower gnocchi to cut out some carbs.  I did skillet cook the gnocchi and it was good that way.

    1. Direction 2- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shallots and garlic and saute for 2 to 3 minutes or until soft. Transfer to a food processor or blender along with the roasted peppers and broth until smooth. 🙂

Hi Gina! Can I substitute Low fat buttermilk for the half & half? I have some leftover from making your Cinnamon Butternut Squash soup which is soooo delicious!!!!

If not I have 1% milk & 0% Greek yogurt.

  40. Any other suggestions on what can be used to replace the half and half? I don’t use half and half or coconut milk that often and don’t want to buy a whole can just for 1/4 cup. I was wondering if plain greek yogurt or plain almond milk would work?? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

  41. Does anyone know how much pre-made gnocchi I should substitute for the kit? I read that the kit makes 2-1/2cups gnocchi, so should I just measure out that much pre-made gnocchi? Thanks!

    1. If you go to the website and look at the photos of the packaging it tells you how much gnocchi it makes in pounds. So you’ll have cups, pounds and you can convert pounds into grams as well by using google. At that point the possibilities are endless.

  42. The whole family loved this and requested to put it in the rotation.  I used coconut  milk to make it dairy free and put cheese on my families in their bowls.  It’s a winner!!! Thanks

  43. This recipe was easy to make & tasty. I did not have the gnocchi kits at my local grocery, so I used another brand. It was not as flavorful as I imagine the Del Lallo is, as it has cheese in it. The only addition I would make would be to add more garlic to your sauce. I would make this again. My picky eater son did not like it, but my husband did. Thanks!

  44. Made this last night and found it to be very bland. Used 7 peppers and roasted them. Made my own gnocchi. Actually a lot of work for a very bland outcome. Usually, I love the recipes, but not this one.

      1. The shallots and garlic blended with the roasted peppers are very fragrant; I found the need to season very little. Agree with the recipe as written

  45. This was delicious! Thank you so much Gina, for taking the time to post such fantastic recipes. I’ve been able to lose 25 pounds while eating your flavorful meals. My children actually sigh in relief when I tell them it’s one of Gina’s recipes. 🙂

This was absolutely delicious!!! We roasted about 5 peppers on the grill & used our own homemade gnocchi-unbelievable!

  47. This was excellent. My family remarked this may be their favourite skinnytaste recipe, and I’ve cooked probably cooked over 100 of them over the years. I used pre-made gnocchi, but it was still great. I think it would be easy to swap canned tomatoes for red peppers if I want to change it around one day. Thank you so much!

  48. Hi there. You say the kit makes 2 1/2 cups of gnocchi and each serving is 1 1/4 cups. Wouldn’t you need more gnocchi to equal five servings of 1 1/4 cups? Thanks for clarifying.

  49. Delish. Made it without the spinach (cause I couldn’t find it in the instructions when I first read it). Definitely goes in the “keeper” file.

  50. This looks amazing! Would it work as a meal prep if I froze individual portions and reheated? I’ve never cooked with gnocchi before. I’m a huge fan of your recipes and often use them as meal prep for my lunches. Thank you!

  51. Hi! This looks delicious and I can’t wait to try it! Just wondering how many servings is this recipe? Thanks!

  52. I usually make my own gnocchi,  but this kit looks like a fun alternative.  I’ll definitely use DeLallo’s roasted red peppers.  I love the ones jarred with garlic.  I’m also wondering where the spinach is added. Thanks.

    1. You could try swapping the half and half with some coconut milk (maybe a bit of the thick part with a bit of the thinner part for a soup, or try all thick for a sauce). I make a creamy tomato sauce with it and cannot taste the coconut nor can hubby. I also love Follow Your Heart shredded and grated parmesan cheese. It is the only dairy free cheese I like besides a few cashew based ones. I was thinking of doing all of this with some TJ Cauliflower gnocchi as I cannot have gluten or dairy and this looks really good!

  53. I second the comment about where to add the spinach? I don’t see it anywhere. Looks yummy though! Is there anything special we should do if we can only find a regular package of gnocchi?

  54. The recipe looks amazing! How much fresh gnocchi do I use if I can’t find Delallo? I don’t think it’s available to buy in Canada.

    1. I am also wondering where the spinach goes in. I’ll put it in with chicken at the end since it cooks down so quickly.

    2. I added the spinach to the sauce and let it wilt as it cooked. We liked the result! This is an easy recipe and also on the cheaper side. All the things! : )

  55. If I can’t find the gnocchi kit, is there a reason that I couldn’t use a pre-made gnocchi? Thanks!
