I love this Greek 7 Layer Dip for its Mediterranean flavors and light and refreshing taste. It’s also just so easy to whip up in a hurry before a party or BBQ. More of my favorite Greek-inspired recipes are my Crustless Spinach and Feta Pie, Greek Turkey Burgers, and Greek Pasta Salad. And if you want more dip ideas, try my Baked Mexican Layer Dip, Buffalo Chicken Dip and Taco Dip.

Party dips can be so heavy, but this one is loaded with healthy ingredients. My favorite part of this dip is the extra protein in the hummus from the garbanzo beans (also known as chickpeas). If you’re serving this Greek layer dip for a large party, you can double the recipe or halve it for a small one.

What is Greek 7 layer dip made of?

Here are the seven layers in this easy Greek dip:

  1. Hummus: The bottom layer is hummus. If you have the time, make the hummus from scratch. If not, use your favorite store-bought hummus. You could also switch it up by using flavored hummus, like red pepper or garlic.
  2. Yogurt: Combine the Greek yogurt, garlic, dill, lemon juice, salt, and ground pepper. You could also make this layer with tzatziki. If you don’t eat dairy or want to keep it vegan, skip the yogurt and add more hummus.
  3. Red Onion: Sub green onions or shallot.
  4. Cucumber: Use a seedless English cucumber since they’re less watery. If you only have regular cucumbers, cut out the seeds.
  5. Tomatoes: Swap Roma tomatoes with cherry or grape tomatoes.
  6. Feta: Feta cheese adds a salty, tangy flavor to the dip.
  7. Kalamata Olives: Finish the dip with sliced kalamatas. If you only have black olives, those will work too.

HOW TO MAKE GREEK DIP

It doesn’t take long to make this Greek layer dip recipe once your ingredients are prepped. Layer all the ingredients, starting with the hummus and ending with the olives in an 8” x 8” or 7″ x 11″ glass dish. Enjoy the dip with whole wheat pita chips or baked corn chips or carrot and celery sticks for a low-carb option.

Can you make Greek 7 layer dip the night before?

You can prep all the ingredients ahead, but it’s best to layer it just before serving, as the cucumbers tend to get watery if they sit too long.

  1. I am always looking for something new for summer gatherings so I tried this. It was a hit! So cool and fresh! My 19 year old son even requested I make it for his birthday! I made it just like the recipe except I added a little Greek seasoning to the hummus.
    Another great skinnytaste recipe!

  2. It was a hit! At our family get togheter. I did one as isand one with olives. I served it with.mini pitas and pita chips. Yummy

  3. Make this dip! I brought it to a bbq ans it was the first dih gone on a table full of junk food! Everyone asked for the recipe.

  4. I thought this dip was ok. I made it about 90 mins before a party and by the time we arrived at the party it was a soupy mess. This was even after I squeezed the tomatoes dry. I probably won’t make again.

  5. One of the best things I’ve ever eaten. I sweat all the vegetables to avoid too much liquid. Also chopped the veggies smaller and substituted basil for dill.

  6. Made this over the weekend and it was a big hit. I used store bought tzatziki instead of the lemon-yogurt mixture, used English cucumber, grape tomatoes and red pepper hummus. Made it about 7am and picked it into a cooler for a two hour car ride, unpacked it and put it in the fridge when I got to my destination. We didn’t eat it til about 7pm and it wasn’t watery at all. Will definitely make this again. My husband loved it.

  7. Curious if cooking the onions prior would be okay for this recipe (fire the folks who don’t care for raw onions). Thanks!

    1. i think you can. Use some olive oil, add thick chopped onions, Leave them to roast slightly. Then you sprinkle it just as you would with fresh chopped onions. Ull need more onions though since cooked onions reduce in size. I often use crispy fried onions in dips and it gives a super nice taste. Everyone loves. I am lucky that i get good quality crispy onions (Oily though). But partly roasted onions also work. I can guarantee u this.

LOVE this recipe and make it all the time. When I don’t bring it to events-folks are not happy! With the onion recall any suggestions on substitutions? Thank you!

  9.  I made this for a New Year’s Eve party, and everyone raves about how fresh and delicious it was.  I shared the recipe with my friends, and I will be making it again.   I used tzatziki sauce instead of the Greek yogurt.

  10. Way too much lemon, I made this for Christmas Eve and by the time it was ready to serve the veggies were swimming

    1. I made this a couple of weeks ago and mine was very watery. It tasted great but was not a huge success. Will try again, maybe I won’t add the lemon

  11. I have made this many times.  It is great and a crowd pleaser.  I play around with types of hummus and sometimes use two different complementing flavors/layers under the greek yogurt.  It is a great recipe and easy to bring to any party!

Everyone LOVED this recipe! Tonight was my 2nd time making it to
    Bring to a BUNCO night!
    DeLISH!! Thanx

  13. I LOVE this recipe!! And so does everyone else who has ever had it! If I show up without it folks are very disappointed. Have made for several years- even done it in individual serving cups. I have also mixed it up by adding chick peas. Am toying with adding some chicken in the future.

  14. Made this for a cook out last year and was told it tasted just like falafel! Lol. Delicious and perfect for summer parties. I served it with pitas chips but it would be good on regular pitas or tortilla chips as well.

  15. I made this for a summer party I had and everyone asked me for the recipe and actually ate it over the more calorie heavy options I made. I am actually making it tonight for football Sunday! It is SO good.

  16. This was amazing!  I will definitely bring it to share as an appetizer. Now I just need really low calories chips to dip in it!

  20. I made this dip for a Packer game today and it was a huge hit! I substituted the yogurt mixture for your Skinnytaste tzatziki sauce and omitted the chopped cucumbers. I also added chopped pepperoncinis to the top for a little kick and served with pita chips. It was awesome! Thanks for another great recipe Gina!

  21. This was wonderful! I made it for a work potluck, so I prepped as much as I could in advance and stored the cucumber with paper towels to soak up the extra moisture.

So far its going well, but I am not sure how it will hold up through the day. My container of hummus was 10 oz and I used the whole thing.

  22. what  is everyones favorite to serve this with? Do you dip celery and carrots into it? tortilla chips?

I want to make it for the weekend cookout but im a bit lost on how its to be used.

A nutritionist at my job gave us a similar recipe some months ago without the Greek yogurt layer. It's been a big hit and I've even gotten my boyfriend to eat it. I've even served it in individual ramekins. Can't wait to try it with the yogurt!

  24. A colleague shared this at work yesterday. I can't figure out how I missed this one on your blog. Delicious! Makes zucchini spears all the more tasty. I'm considering serving it as a side at my daughters wedding. Thank you for your delicious and health conscious recipes.

  25. Think it'd change the taste drastically if I use regular black olives in place of the kalamata? I love kalamata but I'm afraid I won't be able to find them locally (small town).

  26. LOVE THIS! Tasted great, very refreshing on a warm day. I used a store bought hummus and used one that had roasted garlic in it. Everyone in my family loved it. Yummy!

  27. I made this for a wedding shower and it was a huge hit! I served it with some Wheat Thin pita chips and it was awesome. Everyone was really surprised that I made it (I'm one of the youngest in the family so they assume I'm not experienced with cooking). Thanks for making me seem like a fancy chef, Gina!

  28. This looks really yummy. I did recently see something similar but they put it in individual cups. Thought that was a great idea. No double dipping!!

  29. if i'm omitting the yogurt because of dairy issues, is it best to mix the lemon, garlic, dill, etc to the hummus or just omit those too?

This Greek 7 layer dip is a great addition to any mezze spread! Some of the best ingredients in Greek cooking are in this dish. I like to take the extra step and marinate the olives overnight with oregano, olive oil, and lemon rind to give them additional flavor.

    1. skip the hummus. there's nothing greek about hummus. mix the yogurt with the garlic, minced cucumber, dill together to make the "tzatziki"

    2. You can do skordalia instead of hummus. It is a delicious Greek potato puree that is excellent cold. Most Greek restaurants offer it!

Okay, this looks delicious. I can't wait to try this. I have a birthday party coming up and I'm hosting. This should be perfect.

  32. Served this over the weekend and it was a hit! I used an English cucumber and but it still became a bit watery.

  33. Made this last night & it was delicious! Did seed the english cucumber & tomato, but it was still a little watery. It didint matter because the flavor was great. My husband put some on his burger & it was amazing!

    1. One trick that helps with that is after chopping your veggies lay them on paper towels. The paper towels will soak up most of the extra moisture from the veggies.

  34. To make it even easier to put together, I would imagine we could use prepared tsatsiki in place of the yogurt mixture.

  35. This looks yummy- why not try scooping out the seeds in the middle of the cucumber to make it last longer- they contain most of the offending water 🙂

I've only ever had Mexican 7-layer dip. This Greek version looks amazing! Can't wait to try it 🙂

  37. Thanks for the recipe ! This is a great alternative to having the standard hummous dip 🙂
Will be getting onto this one for my next get together 🙂
